Quick Guide to Japan

Getting around in Japan

Japan is probably one of the few countries in the world where travel by public transport is both quick, efficient and a really enjoyable experience. The rail network is excellent and an experience in reliability, efficiency, the application of technology and speed.

For the bigger distances, and to reach some of the more remote islands, there are a number of low-cost and legacy airlines which service both international and regional/domestic airports. The main international access points to Japan are Tokyo and Osaka although indirect routes via other Asian hubs serve a far wider range of cities.

Japanese & Private Railways
  • JR (Japan Railways) Pass: This is a popular option which offers unlimited travel on most JR lines, including Shinkansen bullet trains.

  • Shinkansen (Bullet Trains): These high-speed trains connect major cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Fukuoka, offering a comfortable and fast way to travel.

  • Local Trains: JR also operates slower local trains for shorter distances and scenic routes.

Other Railway Companies

  • Private Railways: Numerous private railway companies operate in urban areas and specific regions, offering additional transportation options.

  • Subways: Major cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto have extensive subway networks for convenient city travel. There are ‘charge cards’ similar to London’s Oyster card which you can pre load.

Wherever you travel in Japan using the railway system, you can be assured of:

  • Punctuality: Japanese trains are renowned for their punctuality.

  • Cleanliness: Trains and stations are well-maintained and clean.

  • Safety: The railway system is extremely safe.

  • Efficiency: The network is well-organized and easy to navigate.

  • Scenic Routes: Some train lines offer stunning views of the countryside.

Self-Driving in Japan

Driving in Japan is very straightforward and on the left side of the road. Unsurprisingly, it’s a very orderly experience and you will need to have awareness of local speed limits and rules. Most street signage is dual language, and a good mobile mapping app is helpful. There are some epic driving routes throughout the country, giving you the freedom to stop off as you choose.

Consider self-drive in combination with public transport as the ideal option to explore the more remote areas of this nation of islands.

Hotels & Ryokans

We generally use either international brand hotels or local Japanese hotel groups and, in regional locations, we offer traditional Japanese Ryokan. Some ryokans offer only Japanese style rooms and shared bathrooms. We tend to choose places where there is Western and a Japanese option with beds as opposed to futons and private bathrooms. Please talk to us if you’d like something different.

Weather and Seasons

The weather in Japan follows similar seasonality as northern Europe; the winter months can be cold and snow is likely on higher ground. Springtime brings warmer weather but if visiting for cherry blossom season expect changeable weather. The summer months can be hot and humid with some rain while autumn weather is variable with occasional typhoons.
