Botswana

A Safari Experience unlike any other
Discover the timeless allure of Botswana, a land of breathtaking contrasts where the vibrant Okavango Delta flourishes alongside the stark beauty of the Kalahari Desert. Here, nature reigns supreme, and life's circle unfolds before you. Botswana's dedication to low-impact tourism guarantees an intimate and authentic safari experience, while the huge concentration of wildlife ensures some of Africa's most unforgettable game-viewing experiences.
Glide through the delta's tranquil waterways on a traditional mokoro (dugout canoe) or motorised boat safari, surrounded by lush vegetation and teeming with diverse wildlife. On land, game drives take you through diverse habitats to some of the continent's largest herds of Elephants and Zebras, while the predators, always on the lookout for an advantage, are often as visible and numerous as their prey. The safari experience here will simply leave you in awe.
Our small, exclusive camps provide unparalleled comfort and proximity to the wilderness and, for an unforgettable adventure, combine a stay in a "dry camp" in the Kalahari with a "wet camp" in the Delta. Botswana is also the home of the mobile safari, and you can enjoy all the luxuries of a lodge in a temporary tented camp set up in the wilderness in advance of your arrival and managed by a team of hospitality and wildlife tracker/guide professionals. To blend a mobile tent adventure with a stay in exquisite fixed lodges makes the perfect Botswana wildlife experience and visit our 'Places to Stay' and 'Safari' sections for more information and ideas.
The country's varied topography, complex natural water supply, and varied habitats make for a fascinating experience for wildlife and adventurists, and we are waiting to share our insights and knowledge with you, so you too can experience the best Botswana has to offer.
Our Quick Guide to Botswana
Travel to Botswana
International travel to Botswana is relatively easy, with connecting flights from Cape Town, Johannesburg, Windhoek and other airports in southern Africa. From Europe and the US, Ethiopian Airlines fly to Maun via Addis Ababa though most visitors arrive from South Africa, Namibia, Zambia or Zimbabwe.
The main access airports to the National Parks are Maun (by air) and Kasane (by land into Chobe and air to others), with direct access to the best wildlife areas. Maun serves as the main connecting point for light-aircraft transfers into the Okavango Delta, Central Kalahari, Makgadikgadi Pans and beyond but Kasane is a great starting point if you intend to visit Chobe for the elephant herds and then travel south-east, ending in Maun.
Gaborone, the capital of Botswana, is mainly a passing point for anyone arriving by road from South Africa and heading for the Kalahari. For most Safaris in Botswana, the most efficient arrival and or departure point is Maun.
Getting around in Botswana
Depending on your itinerary, and how you wish to combine the different wildlife experiences which Botswana is famous for, transfers will be by road using 4x4 vehicles and/or light aircraft flights, which connect the National Parks, private reserves, and lodges via a network of airstrips served by reputable charter operators. A common 'charter seat' price arrangement makes this method of transfer more affordable and allows for an unparalleled experience of seeing Botswana (and some of its wildlife!) from the air, and by providing direct access into these remote areas.
For those who prefer not to fly using light aircraft, speak to us about some excellent game-viewing experiences in selected areas accessible via commercial flights and ground transport only, including stays in excellent lodges and mobile safari camps.
Safaris in Botswana
Depending on what region you are visiting, the focus and style of Safaris differ considerably. In the dry areas, particularly in the Kalahari and Makgadikgadi, Safaris are undertaken in 4x4s, whereas in the wetter regions like the Okavango Delta, these are undertaken in 4x4 vehicles on land and power boats and even Mokoros (dug-out canoes) along the rivers and channels, where spotting game from the meandering waterways is a truly thrilling experience. Walking Safaris are a possibility but are not recommended in the delta and river areas and can not be undertaken in National Parks.
For an unforgettable and up-close safari experience, we highly recommend a mobile safari - where you can enjoy all the creature comforts of a lodge accompanied by a team who set up the camps, provide all the hospitality you expect, and who guide you to the best wildlife in the areas you will be visiting.
Botswana boasts some of the best wildlife viewing in Southern Africa, and this claim is well justified on many levels, due to the diversity of landscape, habitats and climate. The ideal combination for a Botswana Safari is to mix the wetlands with the desert, and we can advise on the best combination based on the time of year, your budget, group make-up, and preferences.
Lodges in Botswana
Due to the nature of the destination, our offering is almost exclusively focused on game lodges. These are set in often remote and hard-to-reach locations, to benefit from the best game. Botswana is renowned for its environmentally and sustainability-focused tourism, and lodges form a large part of the nation's commitment to ecology. Lodges in Botswana have some of the highest standards of comfort and luxury in southern Africa and even in some of the most remote areas, great food and perfectly chilled South African wines are all part of the experience.
All of this noted we choose carefully, prioritising the luxury of experience over unnecessary amenities, and we offer a wide range of options. Talk to us about your preferences and budget, and we are sure to find the perfect combination of places to stay and visit.
Best time to visit Botswana
The best time to visit Botswana is during the dry season, which typically spans from April to October. This period offers pleasant weather with warm days and cooler nights, ideal for outdoor activities and wildlife viewing. The dry season also coincides with the peak safari season, as animals congregate around water sources, making them easier to spot. Confusingly, the dry season is also the time when the Okavango Delta waterways are at their fullest, allowing for water-based safaris through the wide network of channels.
Travelling in the Green Season (November to March) also makes for a great experience, and you would need to consider the odd shower and higher humidity levels as part of the trip's experience.
Game Excursions & Inclusions: What to Expect
Lodges typically work on what we refer to as "Safari All Inclusive", where the offering in most cases includes two wildlife experiences per day (morning and afternoon), additional activities particular to the area, the game experience and topography, such as walking and mokoro (dug-out canoe) safaris. Due to most of the lodges being very small, the offering is often flexible and can be tailored to your daily interests, the weather, time of day, etc. All meals are included, and often all drinks (soft, wines, spirits).
The day typically starts early with coffee/tea and a snack breakfast, followed by a game drive, a hearty breakfast or brunch back at the lodge and then time to relax. Then an afternoon or evening, and sometimes night-time wildlife experience before dinner, drinks by the fire, and the exchanging of tales with your fellow lodge guests.
