Our Quick Guide to Zimbabwe
Getting Around:
We always recommend and arrange transfers by road or light-aircraft flights which connect the National Parks and lodges via a network of airstrips and reputable charter operators. For those who prefer not to fly using light aircraft, we have itineraries to suit that still offer excellent game-viewing experiences, which are flagged in our offering. Transfers will be included in our proposal, and the method of transport will be detailed, along with approximate travelling times.
Access into Zimbabwe is relatively easy, by connecting flights via with the Gulf carriers or via Cape Town and Johannesburg into Harare. There are also flights from many South African cities into Bulawayo. See Travel Essentials for more information.
Lodges & Hotels: From Rustic Charm to Luxury of Experience
Due to the nature of the destination, our offering is almost exclusively focused on game lodges. These are set in often remote and hard-to-reach locations, to benefit from the best game, yet still offer high levels of comfort and service. We choose carefully, prioritising the luxury of experience over unnecessary amenities. We carefully rate hotels and lodges using our "Tent Rating", which takes in the overall accommodation offering, service and quality of experience. See a description of the rating in each accommodation listing.
Best time to visit Zimbabwe
Dry Season: Best for wildlife spotting runs from April through October.
Wet Season: High humidity, high chance of rain, and wildlife spotting are made more difficult by lush vegetation and waterholes being visited less often. Also to consider are road conditions, which can get waterlogged.
Game Drives & Inclusions: What to Expect
Lodges typically work on what we refer to as "Safari All Inclusive", where the offering in most cases includes two drives per day (morning and afternoon), additional activities particular to the area, the game experience and topography, such as walking safaris, spoor tracking, hide visits, etc. All meals are also included, and often all drinks (soft, wines, spirits) excluding premium brands.
The day typically starts early with coffee/tea and a snack breakfast, followed by a game drive, a hearty breakfast or brunch back at the lodge and then time to relax. The afternoon drive usually departs late afternoon and concludes with a sundowner on the way back. Aim to arrive in time for an afternoon game drive and leave after your morning drive on departure day.
