River Dynamics: How Water Shapes the Landscape

Explore the fascinating forces of erosion and deposition in rivers.

Understanding River Dynamics: Erosion and Deposition

River Bend Dynamics

Water flows the fastest on the outside of river bends, and slowest on the inside. The faster-flowing water erodes the outer banks, creating steeper slopes and wider channels. Conversely, the slower-moving water on the inside deposits sediment, forming gentler slopes and creating point bars.

Erosion

The process of wearing away the river banks by fast-flowing water.

Deposition

The process of sediment being dropped by slower-moving water.

Consequences of River Dynamics

Changes in river dynamics can lead to flooding, erosion of infrastructure, and changes in river habitats.
