This camp is located in the heart of the Rocklands, in the northernmost part of the Cederberg Wilderness Area. Known for its dramatic wind-carved sandstone formations, vibrant springtime flowers, and ancient rock art, the rugged Cederberg landscape is a place of unique natural beauty.

Nestled between striking rock faces and picturesque vineyards in the Agter-Pakhuis Valley, the 10 fully equipped boutique glamping tents welcome nature lovers, adventure seekers and those simply looking to recharge their batteries. There are multiple hiking trails between boulders across the property with welcome sights of rock pools and a waterfall on the property, and walks with San rock art in the area. If you're lucky, you might even spot the elusive Verreaux's eagle, nesting high against the cliffs. A scenic drive to the top section of the farm (accessible only with a 4x4 vehicle) takes you to 60 hectares of rooibos tea lands, 260 hectares of unspoiled fynbos gorges blooming with wildflowers in season, and a rock cave - the perfect spot for a picnic. Alternatively, take a more laid-back approach and spend the day at the camp swimming in the farm dam, or sipping some fine wines at the winery next door.

A true landmark in the heart of one of the world's most spectacular wilderness area - Twyfelfontein in Damaraland, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to one of the most extensive collections of rock art engravings in Southern Africa. The lodge is run in partnership with the community and donates some of the profits to help support local community projects. Located amidst the dramatic landscapes of Damaraland, the lodge offers a location surrounded by rugged mountains and vast plains, it blends seamlessly into its environment. Spend your days exploring the area's natural wonders, including the Organ Pipes, Burnt Mountain, and the chance to spot elusive desert elephants. Return to the lodge to unwind by the pool or enjoy a refreshing drink on the terrace while taking in the breathtaking views. The comfortable rooms have ceiling fans, and a room safe, and are decorated using local materials. It's a large lodge with 56 rooms built in blocks of four or eight under thatched roofs. The rooms are simple but cool and comfortable with en-suite bathrooms. The main lodge is tucked away against the rocks where you'll find the dining room, bar, and shop. There is a swimming pool and a deck area where you can relax in the sunshine.

Camp Kipwe is a truly unique and unforgettable experience set amidst the dramatic landscapes of Damaraland. Built into the surrounding granite boulders, perfectly blended into the landscape. Perched on a hill overlooking the Aba Huab Valley, there are breathtaking views of the vast desert plains. There's a main living and dining area and nine individual bungalows offering privacy and comfort, all with en-suite outdoor bathrooms. each one is situated among the rocks, giving you exceptional privacy. There are 2 family rooms with a separate children's tent outside and the suites have plunge pools and large open interiors. Relax by the refreshing pool, or simply unwind on your private deck while taking in the stunning scenery. With its prime location, Camp Kipwe is the ideal base for exploring the wonders of Damaraland, Head out on guided game drives, encounter desert-adapted elephants and discover the area's rich cultural heritage also visit the Damara Living Museum to understand more about the Damara people and their way of life. The camp works with conservation organisations, as well as supporting the Desert Lion Project, with the camp paying towards the salary of a game ranger. The waterhole at the camp has been expanded to provide a local elephant herd with a reliable water source when they visit.

These are based on our personal experience of the hotel, camp or lodge and should not be compared against ratings you find elsewhere. We intend to guide you and don’t be put off by a low tent rating as some of our favourites fall into the 2 and 3-tent categories.​

It is also important to bear in mind that standards vary from country to country and a 4-tent hotel in South Africa cannot be compared with a 4-tent hotel in another part of the world.
