Cherero Camp

Cherero Camp

Central Serengeti

The camp is located at Musabi Plains, a largely undiscovered gem located in a secluded area west of Central Serengeti. Accessed by a short flight from Arusha to Seronera and then a 90-minute drive. Cherero is the Swahili word for the Fischer’s lovebirds that are native to north-central Tanzania.

The six spacious and luxurious tents have a total indoor living area of 50 square metres, and an outdoor private veranda and each has a distinctive African flavour to the interior, with ceiling fans, Wi-Fi, en-suite bathroom. Mindful of the environment, there is no swimming pool or baths but, instead, wonderful rain showers with water heated by solar power from the Tanzanian sunshine. Enjoy the sights and the sounds of the bush from the comfort of your bed! Your day is a blend of relaxation and excitement, with distinct experiences designed to celebrate the different stages of the day:

- Morning: from the privacy of your rooms, watch the magnificent sounds of the Serengeti waking up to a new day. Enjoy a scrumptious breakfast in your suite – just the way you like it!
- Daytime: Safari your style with your private vehicle and guide. Choose a game drive, birdwatching, walking safari, bush meals, or spend time chatting with fellow guests and the Tanzanian camp team.
- Sundown: Chase the sunset through the Serengeti with your private driver and guide, and enjoy a sunset drink as darkness quickly takes over Africa, before heading back to the camp for a hot shower and some rest.
- Night time: Cherero is known for its culinary journeys, and dinners are an exquisite blend of the finest local ingredients and fine wines. Turn into your luxurious suite for the night, to await the next sunrise and start a new day in the Serengeti.

Activities include game drives which are tailored to your requirements, and walking safaris, there are also some traditional board games at the camp for the downtime between wildlife adventures. The Great Migration, when millions of wildebeest go in search of green pastures, can be seen in May and June and again from September to December.

An iconic lodge located in the heart of the Serengeti National Park, one of the most celebrated wildlife reserves in the world. Positioned on a wooded hillside with sweeping views of the endless Serengeti plains.
The design of Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge is inspired by traditional Maasai architecture, with thatched rondavel-style rooms which blend seamlessly into the natural surroundings.

Each of the 65 “rondavel” bedrooms feature locally inspired designs with elaborately carved wooden furniture. Bedrooms are spacious with a very comfortable king-sized bed en-suite bathrooms, and private balconies that enjoy spectacular views. The lodge offers an infinity pool and sun terrace, a beautiful domed dining room reminiscent of the Maasai round huts, along with a scenic safari bar.

The lodge’s location in central Serengeti is ideal for exploring the region’s diverse ecosystems and abundant wildlife. Guided game drives, led by expert guides, provide you with insight into the Serengeti’s iconic wildlife, including lion, leopard, elephant, and cheetah.

Additionally, the lodge offers a range of activities, including hot air balloon safaris, bush breakfast and dinners, and guided nature walks that show you the smaller creatures of the ecosystem. This lodge is located right on the rim of Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater, one of the world’s most unique and breath-taking natural wonders. Due to its setting on the crater's edge, you have panoramic views of the crater floor, which is home to one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. This strategic location allows you to experience the incredible biodiversity of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The lodge’s design is inspired by the architectural style of traditional Maasai huts, with the stone-clad walls, thatched roofs, and indigenous timber used in construction to reflect the lodge's commitment to the environment. All of the 74 rooms enjoy spectacular crater views from either a balcony or a terrace and are designed using the local landscape and wildlife as inspiration. A lounge, bar and dining area, along with a sweeping panoramic terrace are all designed to benefit from the breath-taking views of the crater and wider landscape.

You’re ideally positioned for exploring the Ngorongoro Crater, often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” Game drives into the crater provide opportunities to see an array of wildlife, including elephants, lions, rhinos, and an astonishing variety of bird species. The lodge also offers guided walks along the crater rim, where you can learn about the local flora and fauna while enjoying the views. The lodge’s bar and lounge, with its large stone fireplace, provides a perfect spot to relax and reflect on the day's adventures.

As one of the top camps in the region, Kirawira Serena provides an excellent experience amidst one of the world’s most renowned wildlife habitats.

The camp is designed in the style of an Edwardian safari camp, reminiscent of the early 20th century, with 25 large canvas tents, each on a raised wooden platform, offering stunning views of the Serengeti plains. The tents are furnished in period style, including carved wooden beds, antique writing desks, and Persian rugs and have en-suite bathrooms with hot showers and private verandas. How our Tent Ratings work

These are based on our personal experience of the hotel, camp or lodge and should not be compared against ratings you find elsewhere. We intend to guide you and don’t be put off by a low tent rating as some of our favourites fall into the 2 and 3-tent categories.

It is also important to bear in mind that standards vary from country to country and a 4-tent hotel in South Africa cannot be compared with a 4-tent hotel in another part of the world.

To summarise our grading system, we have considered the following.
