Chobe Game Lodge

Chobe Game Lodge

Chobe National Park

This is the only permanent game lodge on the banks of the Chobe River in the famous Chobe National Park. It’s a great base for exploring the park, although this is a larger lodge you have plenty of space to relax and enjoy your surroundings. The deck is a good place to relax and watch the procession of wildlife as it passes by, it’s like a safari without leaving your lodge.
The rooms are all air-conditioned and also have ceiling fans, a minibar, an en-suite bathroom and a terrace. There is a swimming pool, gym and spa treatments can be organised with the in-house beautician.

Activities include morning and afternoon game drives, bird watching and boat trips. Unlike any other water-based activity in Botswana, the game viewing while on a river safari in Chobe is unsurpassed. Elephants line the water’s edge, hippos congregate in lagoons, hundreds of antelope and giraffes make their way to the water and sightings of predators along the riverbanks are common. The riverboats are designed to ensure everyone can take in the magnificent views in complete comfort from anywhere on the boat. Owing to the flexibility in seating arrangements and the flat deck, the boats are ideal for keen wildlife photographers, with ample space for equipment and the freedom to photograph from any angle.

Perhaps Chundu’s best asset is its location. Chundu Island is located in the heart of the Zambezi National Park, only 21 km from Zimbabwe’s majestic Victoria Falls. The island is superbly positioned on the Zambezi River and only accessible by boat.

In contrast with the hustle and bustle of Vic Falls, a town that caters to both the adrenaline junkies and the curious, indulge instead in deliciously chilled island life.  Chundu Island is a lodge with sole access to the beautiful 1.4 km long island on the mighty Zambezi River, and is a completely different way of experiencing both river life and the Victoria Falls.

There is a lot to do both on the water and on land:  Glorious sunset cruises with snacks and cocktails, the contrasting thrill and peace of canoeing on the river, bird watching, fishing, visiting Victoria Falls, exciting game drives and bush walks in the Zambezi National Park, all under the direction and care of professional and experienced guides.

The lodge is built in among the trees and has spacious rooms with fabulous views over the river into the Zambezi National Park or the banks of the river on the Zambian side. All rooms are attractively furnished and have outdoor shower and a deck with views over the river. There’s a restaurant and bar, swimming pool and plenty space to relax between adventures.

Chundu Island

Victoria Falls

Overlooking the Zambezi National Park, the 72-room Victoria Falls Safari Lodge is just 4km from the majestic Victoria Falls.

Its sunset-facing position offers guests not only stunning and evocative views but also a unique wildlife experience, as the location is renowned for its views over a wildlife-rich watering hole, visited by herds of elephant, buffalo and kudu. Along the river itself, hippo, elephants, crocodiles and an abundance of birdlife can be experienced from the comfort of a river cruise, G&T in hand!

The lodge is built of thatch and timber, rising several levels, giving the impression of a vast open-plan tree house. The central area features the MaKuwa-Kuwa Restaurant, the famous Buffalo Bar, a two-tiered swimming pool and a fitness centre.

Guests can also enjoy a regular complimentary shuttle bus to the town centre, craft markets and the Victoria Falls Rainforest and, of course, to locations to see the Victoria Falls close up.

Rooms are attractively furnished and have a private balcony overlooking the Zambezi National Park, air conditioning, a fan, tea and coffee-making facilities and a safe. The sunsets from the balcony are very special.

Victoria Falls Safari Lodge

Victoria Falls

Popularly known as “the Grand Old Lady of the Falls”, the Victoria Falls Hotel is situated in the Victoria Falls National Park, a World Heritage site. A member of the exclusive Leading Hotels of the World group, this Edwardian-style hotel, built in 1904, has recently been refurbished to combine the charm of the old with the convenience of the new.

Set in lush tropical gardens with lily ponds, palm trees and semi-tropical shrubs, the hotel provides the tranquillity and seclusion that many guests seek. The famous Victoria Falls are within walking distance and “the smoke that thunders” or “Mosi-O-Tunya” in the local dialect, is audible and visible from this luxurious landmark. You might even feel a bit of spray as you walk in the gardens.

There’s a choice of restaurants and a bar, a swimming pool, a shop, a spacious lounge area and pretty gardens. The hotel can also help arrange several tours of the area. Of course, afternoon tea on the terrace is an essential part of any stay!

The rooms are all air-conditioned and have a television, safe, and tea and coffee-making facilities.

How our Tent Ratings work

These are based on our personal experience of the hotel, camp or lodge and should not be compared against ratings you find elsewhere. We intend to guide you and don’t be put off by a low tent rating as some of our favourites fall into the 2 and 3-tent categories.

It is also important to bear in mind that standards vary from country to country and a 4-tent hotel in South Africa cannot be compared with a 4-tent hotel in another part of the world.

To summarise our grading system, we have considered the following.

This is our benchmark for excellent service and experience, location and /or activities.

Good relative value, excellent location and/or experience, and offering an ideal base for exploring the area.

Budget-focused stopover property, sometimes it’s the ideal location on a driving itinerary.

Don’t be put off, these stays are comfortable and a perfect pit stop on a journey where the choices may be limited.
