South Luangwa National Park

Located in South Luangwa National Park this is a friendly owner-run camp right in the heart of the bush. Offering different types of accommodation there’s something for all tastes and budgets. There’s a good-sized pool and plenty of space to relax in between game drives. The camp is one of the the first in Zambia to be awarded a Fair Trade in Tourism certificate and every night you stay they donate a proportion to support the conservation of wildlife in the local area.

Choose from family-friendly Chalet Rooms which can sleep up 6, the wild and luxurious Jackalberry Treehouse which overlooks a waterhole and is ideal for adventurous families, honeymooners or two couples travelling together, the traditional Safari Tents with 270° views, and the ultra-private Crocodile Nest which sleeps 4 – 6.

All meals are served in the restaurant, serving dishes using local produce and in many cases home grown! 

Safari activities include morning and night drives, as well as walking safaris. All are accompanied by an experienced ranger whose knowledge of the bush is second to none.

The South Luangwa National Park is a pristine wilderness in eastern Zambia, and is part of the broader Luangwa Valley. The Valley is home to an astonishing diversity of life, including around 100 species of mammals, more than 400 bird species and over 2000 types of plants. Added to this, there is an amazing density of game, particularly along the riverine strip. Guests at Flatdogs often comment that ‘there’s something around every corner'.

Named after the legendary Zambian tracker and Safari guide Jacob Shawa, Shawa Luangwa Camp is a small, eco-friendly bush camp overlooking the Luangwa River in the Nsefu Sector. This is one of the park’s most untouched areas where excellent year-round game viewing and astonishing habitat diversity make it ideal for safaris by foot and vehicle. Each of our 4 Luxury Safari Tents is individually styled for a modern under-canvas experience on the banks of the Luangwa River. The tents consist of three Couples Tents and a spacious Family Tent. The camp enjoys an excellent position overlooking the nearby river, a comfortable and welcoming main area for dining and socialising and a small pool Activities are varied and based around game drives, using electric 4x4 vehicles and these are conducted as silently as possible, and with minimal impact on the environment. As the birthplace of the walking safari, South Luangwa beckons you to step out into the bush with one of the camp's knowledgeable guides and to fall in love with this wild and precious place.

This is an intimate and authentic camp offering understated elegance, seclusion and superb service in the heart of the Luangwa Valley. You will discover excellent views of the lagoon and the river in every area of this beautifully designed camp. Lions, spotted hyenas, leopards, and wild dogs are the main predators. Though the park is popularly known as ‘Valley of the Leopards’, lions are more widely and easily seen. There are 3 species of herbivores which are endemic to the park; there are Crawshay’s zebra (subspecies of the more common plains zebra), Thornicroft’s giraffe (distinguished by its different colouration which is more striking than other species found in the rest of Southern Africa) and Cookson’s wildebeest (slightly smaller than blue wildebeest with slightly reddish bands). The six chalets open to fantastic views of the river and have en-suite bathrooms, the camp has a swimming pool and restaurant which are set back from the river. Activities include game drives, walking safaris, seasonal boating and village tours. All meals and local drinks are included in the nightly price.

Nsefu Camp, the first photographic safari camp in Zambia, offers charm, history, exclusivity and comfort in what is without a doubt the best location in the South Luangwa National Park. The camp was the first camp to be built and is both unique and steeped in history. It enjoys an excellent location in the Nsefu sector on a magnificent meander of the Luangwa River where elephants frequently cross. With just six chalets it’s small and intimate and they have kept the old-world charm whilst embracing modern convenience with en suite bathrooms each room has views of the river from the terrace and offers understated elegance for your stay in the bush.  South Luangwa is a paradise for wildlife lovers, with game species including elephants, buffalo, hippos, giraffes, leopards, and lions and over 450 species of birds. Several antelope species are found in large numbers, especially the puku and impala. Also, to be found in huge herds are buffalo and elephants. Activities include game drives, walking safaris, seasonal boating and village tours. All meals and local drinks are included in the nightly price. How our Tent Ratings work

These are based on our personal experience of the hotel, camp or lodge and should not be compared against ratings you find elsewhere. We intend to guide you and don’t be put off by a low tent rating as some of our favourites fall into the 2 and 3-tent categories.​

It is also important to bear in mind that standards vary from country to country and a 4-tent hotel in South Africa cannot be compared with a 4-tent hotel in another part of the world.
