An iconic lodge located in the heart of the Serengeti National Park, one of the most celebrated wildlife reserves in the world. Positioned on a wooded hillside with sweeping views of the endless Serengeti plains.
The design of Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge is inspired by traditional Maasai architecture, with thatched rondavel-style rooms which blend seamlessly into the natural surroundings.

Each of the 65 “rondavel” bedrooms feature locally inspired designs with elaborately carved wooden furniture. Bedrooms are spacious with a very comfortable king-sized bed en-suite bathrooms, and private balconies that enjoy spectacular views. The lodge offers an infinity pool and sun terrace, a beautiful domed dining room reminiscent of the Maasai round huts, along with a scenic safari bar.

The lodge’s location in central Serengeti is ideal for exploring the region’s diverse ecosystems and abundant wildlife. It is particularly well-positioned for witnessing the Great Migration, one of nature’s most extraordinary spectacles, where millions of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelles traverse the plains in search of fresh grazing lands. Guided game drives, led by expert guides, provide you with insight into the Serengeti’s iconic wildlife, including lion, leopard, elephant, and cheetah.

Additionally, the lodge offers a range of activities, including hot air balloon safaris, bush breakfast and dinners, and guided nature walks that show you the smaller creatures of the ecosystem. There are also cultural experiences, where you can engage with the local Maasai community and learn about their traditions and way of life.

This lodge is located right on the rim of Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater, one of the world’s most unique and breath-taking natural wonders. Due to its setting on the crater's edge, you have panoramic views of the crater floor, which is home to one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. This strategic location allows you to experience the incredible biodiversity of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The lodge’s design is inspired by the architectural style of traditional Maasai huts, with the stone-clad walls, thatched roofs, and indigenous timber used in construction to reflect the lodge's commitment to the environment. All of the 74 rooms enjoy spectacular crater views from either a balcony or a terrace and are designed using the local landscape and wildlife as inspiration. A lounge, bar and dining area, along with a sweeping panoramic terrace are all designed to benefit from the breath-taking views of the crater and wider landscape.

You’re ideally positioned for exploring the Ngorongoro Crater, often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” Game drives into the crater provide opportunities to see an array of wildlife, including elephants, lions, rhinos, and an astonishing variety of bird species. The lodge also offers guided walks along the crater rim, where you can learn about the local flora and fauna while enjoying the views. The lodge’s bar and lounge, with its large stone fireplace, provides a perfect spot to relax and reflect on the day's adventures.

Ngorongoro Serena Lodge

Ngorongoro Crater

The lodge is located in the western corridor of the Serengeti National Park, offering a blend of old-world elegance and the untamed beauty of the African wilderness. As one of the top camps in the region, Kirawira Serena provides an excellent experience amidst one of the world’s most renowned wildlife habitats.

The camp is designed in the style of an Edwardian safari camp, reminiscent of the early 20th century, with 25 large canvas tents, each on a raised wooden platform, offering stunning views of the Serengeti plains. The tents are furnished in period style, including carved wooden beds, antique writing desks, and Persian rugs and have en-suite bathrooms with hot showers and private verandas. Other camp facilities include a refreshing swimming pool and sun terrace, lounge area, a bar and an elegant tented dining room, where gourmet five-course lunches and dinners are served, accompanied by fine wines. Enjoy a sundowner on the outside terrace area, around a campfire, with fellow guests. A new feature is the soon-to-open watering hole lookout.

You are ideally located for witnessing the Great Migration, particularly between May and July when millions of wildebeest, zebra, and other herbivores cross the Grumeti River, often shadowed by predators like lions and crocodiles. The camp offers expertly guided game drives in open-sided 4x4 vehicles, providing exceptional opportunities to observe wildlife in their natural habitat.

Kirawira Serena Camp offers an exceptional safari experience, combining the wonder of the Serengeti with high levels of comfort and service, making it a perfect retreat for discerning travellers.

How our Tent Ratings work

These are based on our personal experience of the hotel, camp or lodge and should not be compared against ratings you find elsewhere. We intend to guide you and don’t be put off by a low tent rating as some of our favourites fall into the 2 and 3-tent categories.

It is also important to bear in mind that standards vary from country to country and a 4-tent hotel in South Africa cannot be compared with a 4-tent hotel in another part of the world.

To summarise our grading system, we have considered the following.
