Liwonde National Park

Situated on a large open plain stretching towards the Shire River in Liwonde National Park, Kuthengo is nestled among fever trees and baobabs. The camp has only 5 modern safari tents (one of which is a 2 x double family tent), which are air-conditioned and have their own sitting area and private bathroom.

In between game drives, enjoy the setting of the camp. You’ll see Fish Eagle in the trees and enjoy the beautiful setting. The camp has a sitting area as well as a laundry service and a small plunge pool for a cooling dip. All meals are taken in a covered and central deck area, which overlooks the river. Hippo graze nearby as you enjoy wonderful meals. There is also a small social area nearby, for that pre- and post-dinner G&T overlooking the wonderful vista across the Shire River.

The unspoilt Liwonde National Park is a fabulous retreat to enjoy all that’s on offer from game drives and walking safaris, as well as boat cruises along the Shire River. The wildlife is plentiful with many elephants, hippo, buffalo and crocodiles. There are also some rhino which have recently been reintroduced, as well as some big cats (leopard, lion and some Cheetah) and over 400 types of birds, all of which add up to an exciting safari destination.

This charming hotel has been created from two historic buildings on the seafront of the capital Stone Town. Much of the original architecture has been retained, giving you a feel of the feel of bygone days. The whole of Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and exploring its winding streets is a must. 

You’ll find a swimming pool, a fabulous rooftop terrace restaurant with views of the bay and the bar is a great place to enjoy traditional music when there’s a visiting band. There are a range of health and beauty treatments available. Local sightseeing can be arranged with the hotel if you want to explore.

Located just outside the bustling town of Arusha, it serves as an ideal gateway to Tanzania’s famous northern safari circuit, which includes destinations such as the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Mount Kilimanjaro. 

The hotel is set in beautifully landscaped gardens, surrounded by lush coffee plantations, and enjoys stunning views of Lake Duluti. The hotel’s 42 rooms are stone cottages that are spread across the grounds, offering a sense of privacy and seclusion. An attractive hotel located a short distance from the city centre which is around a 10-minute walk away where you’ll find markets and a selection of restaurants. The friendly staff and bright décor make this a popular place to stay before or after a safari. 

You’ll find a swimming pool, restaurant, bar and gift shop, if you don’t want to head into town there is a restaurant which is known for its Tanzanian dishes as well as international-style food. There’s a pool bar and lounge bar if you fancy a tipple. 

The 29 rooms are all slightly different in terms of style, size and décor but all have air conditioning, television, and room safe and are well equipped for your pre or post-safari stay.

How our Tent Ratings work

These are based on our personal experience of the hotel, camp or lodge and should not be compared against ratings you find elsewhere. We intend to guide you and don’t be put off by a low tent rating as some of our favourites fall into the 2 and 3-tent categories.​

It is also important to bear in mind that standards vary from country to country and a 4-tent hotel in South Africa cannot be compared with a 4-tent hotel in another part of the world.
