Nkwali Camp

Nkwali Camp

South Luangwa National Park

This is an intimate and authentic camp offering understated elegance, seclusion and superb service in the heart of the Luangwa Valley. You will discover excellent views of the lagoon and the river in every area of this beautifully designed camp.

Lions, spotted hyenas, leopards, and wild dogs are the main predators. Though the park is popularly known as ‘Valley of the Leopards’, lions are more widely and easily seen. There are 3 species of herbivores which are endemic to the park; there are Crawshay’s zebra (subspecies of the more common plains zebra), Thornicroft’s giraffe (distinguished by its different colouration which is more striking than other species found in the rest of Southern Africa) and Cookson’s wildebeest (slightly smaller than blue wildebeest with slightly reddish bands).

The six chalets open to fantastic views of the river and have en-suite bathrooms, the camp has a swimming pool and restaurant which are set back from the river. Activities include game drives, walking safaris, seasonal boating and village tours. All meals and local drinks are included in the nightly price.

Other Options

The lodge enjoys one of Africa’s finest wilderness locations, from an elevated position on a range of remote hills overlooking the vastness of Lake Kariba.

Bumi is situated near the Northeastern border of the Matusadona National Park and is easily accessible by light aircraft and boat, allowing for swift transfers without a long journey. Not only is Kariba’s shoreline rich in wildlife but the lodge’s proximity to Matusadona allows for the animals to roam freely between the national park and Bumi Hills’ private concession.

Activities include guided walking safaris, stargazing, boating, birding, catch-and-release fishing, day and night game drives searching for lions, as well as cultural visits to the nearby local community.

At the heart of the lodge is the beautiful infinity pool that seems to blend endlessly into the lake horizon. The pool is surrounded by dining terraces on different levels. The lodge interiors have been beautifully styled in a fusion of contemporary western and African styles. There’s also a gym, library, spa and kids club.

The safari lodge has a total of 10 rooms, all with balconies and uninterrupted views over Lake Kariba. They are all air conditioned and have safe, tea and coffee-making facilities and a mini bar.

Bumi Hills Safari Lodge

Lake Kariba

Remote and wild, the camp is an ideal spot for adventure seekers and seasoned safari goers alike. Situated in one of the most southern and pristine areas of Hwange National Park, this small, private camp is a safe and comfortable home base for a unique and untamed wilderness experience.

The camp has no power, wifi, or mobile phone service, this remote location is the best form of digital detox. Days start and end around the campfire, all meals are enjoyed outside, and the creative camp chefs cook up tasty treats over an open fire

Three tents are set up as twins—Two ¾ beds and an ensuite open air bathroom with toilet and bucket shower. There are two tents are set up as doubles—One double bed and an ensuite open air bathroom with bucket shower.

The Jozi experience is ideal as a three-night add-on to one of the other camps in Hwange. Activities range from up-close-and-personal encounters with large herds of elephants to mountain biking and walking along wildlife footpaths.

While we have awarded tented lodge with only 2 "tents", the luxury of simplicity is what Jozi is about; tented accommodation with a ‘star bed’ option, and dining al fresco around the campfire, as close to nature as you can get.

Please note this camp may be closed between December and April, depending on the weather. Please check with us for availability during these months.

Jozibanini Lodge

Hwange

Remotely located within a private concession in the northern part of Hwange National Park, the lodge offers an exceptional safari experience.

The main guest area and nine spacious thathed chalets are built on decks overlooking a waterhole, which is frequented by large numbers of elephants. Each chalet has its outside shower as well as a ceiling fan, tea and coffee-making facilities and a safe and private balcony. Up to two children over 7 years of age can share a tent with an adult.

Meals are served on the open-air deck of the main lodge or in the bush. There’s a small swimming pool which is great for a refreshing dip if you can get there before the elephants do!

Activities include game drives, walking safaris, and night game drives.  You might find the famous elephant hunting lions! The best part of camp life is that it is completely flexible, choose to relax on your private balcony with an early morning cup of coffee or whittle away the last of the daylight hours on the main lodge deck with sundowners, watching the wildlife amble up for a drink at the waterhole—during the driest times of the year, elephants can pass by the hundreds.

Please note this camp may be closed between December and April, depending on the weather. Please check with us for availability during these months.

How our Tent Ratings work

These are based on our personal experience of the hotel, camp or lodge and should not be compared against ratings you find elsewhere. We intend to guide you and don’t be put off by a low tent rating as some of our favourites fall into the 2 and 3-tent categories.

It is also important to bear in mind that standards vary from country to country and a 4-tent hotel in South Africa cannot be compared with a 4-tent hotel in another part of the world.

To summarise our grading system, we have considered the following.

High in both quality and luxury of experience, and property must have ‘wowed’ us on many levels.

This is our benchmark for excellent service and experience, location and /or activities.

Good relative value, excellent location and/or experience, and offering an ideal base for exploring the area.

Budget-focused stopover property, sometimes it’s the ideal location on a driving itinerary.

Don’t be put off, these stays are comfortable and a perfect pit stop on a journey where the choices may be limited.
