Rufiji River Camp

Rufiji River Camp

Nyerere NP

Rufiji River Camp enjoys an enviable location high up on the banks of the Great Rufiji River, from where you will witness spectacular sunsets chorused by hippos grunting and a plethora of bird song.

Redesigned in 2009 to compliment the perfect location on a promontory in the river bank, the camp was built by local craftsmen, combining Makuti palm roofs with Selous-sourced paving stones and farmed hardwoods to create a beautiful and comfortable accommodation. There is a shaded swimming pool, a great way to cool off between safari activities, and a welcoming main lodge with a bar, social areas and restaurant.

Accommodation comprises 11 tents, positioned along the river bed, each pitched underneath thatched roofs with massive verandas giving views up and down the river. Each tent has an en suite bathroom, with solar-heated water for showering. Additionally, there are 3 suites, each comprising of 2 tents and and 2 en suite bathrooms - ideal for families or friends.

Activities include 2 x daily game drives (full-day game drives including a bush lunch can be requested in advance), walking safaris and the lodge operates a Game Package, where all food, activities, water, tea and coffees are included.

How our Tent Ratings work

These are based on our personal experience of the hotel, camp or lodge and should not be compared against ratings you find elsewhere. We intend to guide you and don’t be put off by a low tent rating as some of our favourites fall into the 2 and 3-tent categories.

It is also important to bear in mind that standards vary from country to country and a 4-tent hotel in South Africa cannot be compared with a 4-tent hotel in another part of the world.

To summarise our grading system, we have considered the following.

High in both quality and luxury of experience, and property must have ‘wowed’ us on many levels.

This is our benchmark for excellent service and experience, location and /or activities.

Good relative value, excellent location and/or experience, and offering an ideal base for exploring the area.

Budget-focused stopover property, sometimes it’s the ideal location on a driving itinerary.

Don’t be put off, these stays are comfortable and a perfect pit stop on a journey where the choices may be limited.
