Self-Drive & Vehicle Hire in Namibia
Car hire & self-drive
Namibia is the perfect "self-drive" destination; a good road network, amazing places to stop and stay, incredible landscapes and experiences that make the drives so rewarding. This is pretty much just as well, because getting around any other way isn't straightforward. While transfers can be arranged from Windhoek's airport to any hotels and lodges nearby, taking a transfer option to any other destination can prove to be expensive, with the added dilemma of then not having any mode of transport at the other end...
Choosing the right vehicle
We generally recommend a mid-sized all-terrain vehicle, even for just two people. Journeys can be long and, although most of the roads are in good shape, there can be sudden breaks to that rule, and weather also plays a part in making a normally passable stretch into a little adventure. Our car-hire provider has a fleet of well-maintained 4x4 and all-terrain vehicles - see details in the images below.
Car hire locations and services
Car hire can be arranged from both Windhoek's International and light- / private aircraft airports and also delivered to any hotel in the Windhoek area. So if you have had a long flight, why not book a transfer with us from the airport to your hotel, and then have the vehicle delivered the day you would like your driving adventure to start?
Note that should the vehicle be delivered to the guest in a rural location where fuel is not reliably available, the vehicle will be re-fuelled at the closest reliable fuel station before delivery at the hire company's expense. For collections, should the vehicle be collected from the guest in a rural location where fuel is not reliably available, the vehicle will be re-fuelled at the closest reliable fuel station at the guest's expense and deducted from the credit card hold.
Important notes about cross-border travel
Crossing borders into neighbouring countries like Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia or Angola is excluded from our standard car hire terms. If you intend to cross a border, speak to us before booking your car hire.
Enjoy the journey
Stops and rest breaks are a great part of the experience, with good roadside service stations and even restaurants, but planning your journey is critical, as distances can be far and the next petrol station can be a few hours' drive away.
