Cycling in Soweto
Fully guided half day exploring the fascinating township of Soweto by bike.
From Soweto experience an eco-friendly cycling adventure around the township with a local guide, getting to know the different communities and their history.
Your cycle route will take you past places such as a former migrant workers' hostel for men - before you continue to Meadowlands - famous for the forced removals from Sophia Town in the 1950s. Cycle through historical landmarks of the 1976 student uprisings and visit the memorial site of Hector Pieterson. You will also cycle down Vilakazi Street where Nelson Mandela used to live and where Bishop Desmond Tutu had his home. Lunch is included at the local backpackers - a delicious traditional African stew, cooked over a fire and served with a chunk of white bread - a Sowetan ‘bunny chow'.
Throughout the ride, your guide shares intimate and first-hand knowledge about the history of Soweto and its notable sites, as well as personal anecdotes about contemporary Sowetan life and culture. Both fun and informative, this is an activity geared for individuals and families who wish to embrace the vibey and friendly street culture of Soweto.
Total cycling time is approximately 2 and a half hours with the balance of the time spent enjoying lunch and travelling between Soweto and your hotel.
Transfers to and from Soweto from your Johannesburg hotel are included.
