Aurari Camp

Aurari Camp

Serengeti

Enticingly close to the Mara River where the wildebeest herds make their annual journey in search of greener pasture, Aurari Camp offers a sanctuary amid the wilds of the Serengeti. It’s just a short 45-minute flight from Arusha to Kogatende airstrip where the camp staff will meet you from your chartered light aircraft flight and drive you to the camp.

The six spacious tents have a total indoor living area of 50 square metres, with a spacious bedroom in the centre, a lounge area wing and a bathroom wing, plus an outdoor private veranda. Each has a distinctive African flavour to the interior. They have ceiling fans, Wi-Fi, en-suite bathroom and, being mindful of the environment, there is no swimming pool or baths but instead you can enjoy wonderful rain showers with water heated by solar power from the Tanzanian sunshine. You can even see the sunrise from the comfort of your bed! Your day is a blend of relaxation and excitement, with distinct experiences designed to celebrate the different stages of the day:

- Morning: from the privacy of your own rooms, watch the magnificent sunrise, before indulging in a scrumptious breakfast – just the way you like it!
- Daytime: Safari your style with your private vehicle and guide. Choose a game drive, birdwatching, walking safari, bush meals, or balloon safari!
- Sundown: A magical time in the bush, and after a hot shower and some rest, some nibbles, snacks and the company of your fellow camp guests.
- Night time: Enjoy dinner under the African stars, accompanied by the sounds of campfire, with delicious food and wine, before turning into your luxurious tented suite and being serenaded to sleep by the sounds of the night time occupants of the Serengeti.

With a northerly aspect towards the Mara River in Northern Serengeti and neighbouring Maasai Mara, the views are fabulous. Perfect as a base for Great Migration (July – October), safaris or a retreat away from it all, the camp offers exceptional hospitality in the heart of the Serengeti.

The camp is closed for the month of April.

Situated on a large open plain stretching towards the Shire River in Liwonde National Park, Kuthengo is nestled among fever trees and baobabs. The camp has only 5 modern safari tents (one of which is a 2 x double family tent), which are air-conditioned and have their own sitting area and private bathroom.

In between game drives, enjoy the setting of the camp. You’ll see Fish Eagle in the trees and enjoy the beautiful setting. The camp has a sitting area as well as a laundry service and a small plunge pool for a cooling dip. All meals are taken in a covered and central deck area, which overlooks the river. Hippo graze nearby as you enjoy wonderful meals. There is also a small social area nearby, for that pre- and post-dinner G&T overlooking the wonderful vista across the Shire River.

The unspoilt Liwonde National Park is a fabulous retreat to enjoy all that’s on offer from game drives and walking safaris, as well as boat cruises along the Shire River. The wildlife is plentiful with many elephants, hippo, buffalo and crocodiles. There are also some rhino which have recently been reintroduced, as well as some big cats (leopard, lion and some Cheetah) and over 400 types of birds, all of which add up to an exciting safari destination.

How our Tent Ratings work

These are based on our personal experience of the hotel, camp or lodge and should not be compared against ratings you find elsewhere. We intend to guide you and don’t be put off by a low tent rating as some of our favourites fall into the 2 and 3-tent categories.

It is also important to bear in mind that standards vary from country to country and a 4-tent hotel in South Africa cannot be compared with a 4-tent hotel in another part of the world.

To summarise our grading system, we have considered the following.

High in both quality and luxury of experience, and property must have ‘wowed’ us on many levels.

This is our benchmark for excellent service and experience, location and /or activities.

Good relative value, excellent location and/or experience, and offering an ideal base for exploring the area.

Budget-focused stopover property, sometimes it’s the ideal location on a driving itinerary.

Don’t be put off, these stays are comfortable and a perfect pit stop on a journey where the choices may be limited.
