Officially opened in 1965, Keekorok Lodge is situated in the path of the spectacular annual migration which occurs from July to October every year. Surrounded by 700 square miles of lush sun-drenched plains; the lodge is right in the heart of the Maasai Mara where you can enjoy the sights of hippo and zebra grazing in the lodge. The lodge is an eco-friendly and conservation-committed lodge that serves the Maasai Mara and supports the mission of the Global Alliance of National Parks.

This property has been graced by several dignitaries over the years such as the founding father of Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta, Prince Charles, Dr Henry Kissinger and former Secretary of State George P. Shultz. Keekorok means ‘place of black trees’ in the local Maasai language and is in an area with plenty of wildlife. At any time of year, the surrounding landscape is teeming with wildlife, including all the ‘Big 5’ and mover 400 species of bird.

The comfortable rooms are located in single story buildings in the grounds, and all are attractively furnished and have Wi-Fi, safe, tea and coffee making facilities as well as a fridge.

Maasai Mara

Located in the heart of the iconic Maasai Mara this simple lodge offers a welcome stop on your safari. Sitting on the banks of the Talek river it has been built to blend in with the natural surroundings. It’s conveniently located for going out on game drives and in between adventures there’s a lovely pool area to relax in.

The grounds of the Mara Simba stretch for almost a kilometre along the riverbank and are ideal for spotting all manner of game, that come to drink on the river’s edge. During the great migration over a million wildebeest and 300,000 zebra pass by to cross the Mara River.
The pretty landscaped gardens around the lodge are filled with indigenous trees and are home a great variety of birds and butterflies.

There’s a swimming pool, as well as a restaurant and bar. The lodge is decorated in traditional Maasai style and both the public areas and rooms give you a real feeling of Africa.

The lodge is located on the shores of Lake Naivasha in the Rift Valley, one of two freshwater lakes, the other being Lake Baringo. Sitting on 120 acres with acacia trees, giraffes, and vervet monkeys wandering freely in the gardens, the lodge feels like its own little paradise. At nighttime, the hippos come to graze on the grass which keeps it nice and trimmed! You’re a little over an hour by road from Nairobi and this is a great spot to unwind after travel and before you commence your safari adventures.
The rooms are comfortable with ceiling fans, tea and coffee-making facilities, room safe and either a balcony or terrace. There’s also a restaurant, bar swimming pool and a tennis court. Activities include nature walks, bird watching, cycling, and day trips to Cresent Island can be arranged. With over 1,500 hippos in the area, you are almost guaranteed to see one.

An interesting historical fact is that in the 1930’s flying boats en route from Durban to London used to make a stop on the lake for refuelling and refreshment, not sure what the ancestors of the hippos and flamingos made of their flying visit! The evenings can be cool here so do take a sweatshirt or light fleece.

How our Tent Ratings work

These are based on our personal experience of the hotel, camp or lodge and should not be compared against ratings you find elsewhere. We intend to guide you and don’t be put off by a low tent rating as some of our favourites fall into the 2 and 3-tent categories.

It is also important to bear in mind that standards vary from country to country and a 4-tent hotel in South Africa cannot be compared with a 4-tent hotel in another part of the world.

To summarise our grading system, we have considered the following.
