Crater Forest Tented Camp

Crater Forest Tented Camp

Ngorongoro

Located on the edge of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in northern Tanzania within a highland forest, the camp offers a unique blend of wilderness, comfort, and cultural immersion, making it an ideal base for exploring the Ngorongoro Crater and the surrounding region.

The camp features 15 spacious tented rooms, each perched on a raised platform with a private veranda overlooking the lush forest and the distant coffee plantations. Each tent is furnished with comfortable beds, en-suite bathrooms, and a wood-burning stove to keep guests warm during the cooler highland nights.

The camp is just a short drive from the Ngorongoro Crater, one of Africa’s most famous wildlife destinations. The crater is a haven for an incredible diversity of wildlife, including the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and the endangered black rhino. The dense animal population within the crater makes it one of the best places in Tanzania for game viewing, you are likely to encounter zebra, wildebeest, hippo, and a variety of antelope species. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the abundance of birdlife, including flamingos, crowned cranes, and the vibrant Fischer’s lovebird.

Beyond the crater, the camp’s location allows you could explore the surrounding highlands, where guided walking safaris provide a chance to discover the flora and fauna of the forest and learn about the local Maasai culture. In the evenings, gather around the campfire to share stories and enjoy the sounds of the African night.

This lodge is located right on the rim of Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater, one of the world’s most unique and breath-taking natural wonders. Due to its setting on the crater's edge, you have panoramic views of the crater floor, which is home to one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. This strategic location allows you to experience the incredible biodiversity of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The lodge’s design is inspired by the architectural style of traditional Maasai huts, with the stone-clad walls, thatched roofs, and indigenous timber used in construction to reflect the lodge's commitment to the environment. All of the 74 rooms enjoy spectacular crater views from either a balcony or a terrace and are designed using the local landscape and wildlife as inspiration. A lounge, bar and dining area, along with a sweeping panoramic terrace are all designed to benefit from the breath-taking views of the crater and wider landscape.

You’re ideally positioned for exploring the Ngorongoro Crater, often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” Game drives into the crater provide opportunities to see an array of wildlife, including elephants, lions, rhinos, and an astonishing variety of bird species. How our Tent Ratings work

These are based on our personal experience of the hotel, camp or lodge and should not be compared against ratings you find elsewhere. We intend to guide you and don’t be put off by a low tent rating as some of our favourites fall into the 2 and 3-tent categories.

It is also important to bear in mind that standards vary from country to country and a 4-tent hotel in South Africa cannot be compared with a 4-tent hotel in another part of the world.

To summarise our grading system, we have considered the following.
