KaingU Safari Lodge

KaingU Safari Lodge

Namwala Game Management Area

Set in an area of pristine wilderness, the lodge offers a magnificent safari experience in the heart of Kafue National Park. This owner-run lodge offers comfortable accommodation, a warm welcome and a unique place to stay for experiencing the ‘real’ Zambia and to enjoy the wildlife and scenery.

Set on raised individual private wooden decks, each overlooking the Kafue River, the Lodge comprises 6 double Meru-style tents with en suite bathrooms, indoor showers and an open-air shower. The “Honeymoon-tent” has an additional outside bath. Every tent is additionally roofed with thatch to provide extra shade and further blend into nature. The family house consists of 2 bedrooms (one queen, one twin), 2 en-suite bathrooms, an outside shower and a central living area opening onto a private deck overlooking the river. It’s a perfect spot for a couple with children or a small group of friends.

Another experience is to sleep in a Tonga Tree Basket, which provides a unique and secure night under the stars close to nature. Seasonally set in trees at stunning river locations, you fall asleep and wake up to the relaxing sounds of the Kafue. Enjoy a night out individually, or with your group of up to six. To answer everyone’s first question, besides the bucket ‘bathroom’, there is an ash-pit drum toilet. Alternatively, the camp manages several campsites in the area – ask us for details.

The camp also does special dining experiences where you can have your breakfast on an island on the way back from your game drive, or even dinner around the fire watching the sun go down and listening to the sounds of the rapids.

The camp’s activities are plentiful and, as well as game drives there are boat safaris, canoe trips, young adventurers’ activities, out-of-camp-dining, walking safaris, community visits and fishing.

Lazy Lagoon Island Lodge

Nestled on the outskirts of the Katisunga plain, Katavi Wildlife Camp seamlessly blends into the fringes of the surrounding woodland, offering one of the most spectacular vistas in the park. Animals, both predators and their prey, must parade past the camp on their daily commute to drink in the nearby Katuma River - making this the perfect observation point for some of the most dramatic wildlife encounters.

Accommodation is made up of six spacious Meru-style mosquito-proof tents, which all offer direct and picturesque views of the plain, and each tent is constructed on an elevated wooden platform, providing shade from the noonday sun, and with a classic thatched roof. All tents are equipped with private en-suite facilities, and boast an expansive veranda complete with a comfortable hammock and seating area. There are 2 additional family tents plus a honeymoon tent.

Game drives don't need to go far, as the wildlife is in such great abundance close to the camp and whether from the veranda of your tent, on a game drive or from the elevated viewing lounge, you'll have the privilege of witnessing predators alongside the plains game during daylight hours. And in the evenings, brace yourself for the spectacle of predators in pursuit as the game retreats to the safety of the trees.

Meals are served in a comfortable and welcoming main lodge which also has a cosy bar and viewing deck.

Katavi Wildlife Lodge

Katavi

Nestled along one of the most breathtaking stretches of the Great Ruaha River, you can observe wildlife from your veranda throughout the day in complete comfort. Few other camps can claim such an idyllic setting. Ruaha is divided between two sites, one featuring a dining area by the river, and the other perched high on a nearby kopje, providing a wholly unique perspective. Crafted from local stone and thatch, the lodge is integrated with the natural kopjes and takes full advantage of its exceptional position along a bend in the river.

Ruaha River Lodge stands as the sole 'lodge' within Ruaha, boasting 24 stone chalets that extend along the riverbank - all with excellent panoramic views. Every chalet offers magnificent vistas from its spacious front veranda. Inside, the generous interiors encompass a cosy sitting area, a convenient writing desk, and a choice of twin or double beds. The rear of each chalet houses a sizable bathroom adorned with rustic timber, complete with a shower and double basins.

Enjoy game drives, nature walks with local Masai guides, relax on your veranda or comfortable common areas and, in dry season, the wildlife viewing from the lodge can be as good as on any game drive!

How our Tent Ratings work

These are based on our personal experience of the hotel, camp or lodge and should not be compared against ratings you find elsewhere. We intend to guide you and don’t be put off by a low tent rating as some of our favourites fall into the 2 and 3-tent categories.

It is also important to bear in mind that standards vary from country to country and a 4-tent hotel in South Africa cannot be compared with a 4-tent hotel in another part of the world.

To summarise our grading system, we have considered the following.
