Located in one of the small streets of the bustling heart of Stone Town you find The Swahili House. Originally set up and used as an Indian merchant house in the 19th century. In the 125 years that followed the building became a home to one of the many Sultan families that inhabited Zanzibar. The hotel has been restored to its original state, giving you a real Zanzibari experience!

There are 16 deluxe rooms and 6 suites, all have air conditioning and fan, safe and deluxe rooms have a roof terrace. Staying here is like travelling back in with views of historic Stone Town and the narrow alleyways there are to explore. You’ll experience a fusion of cultures, Omani, Persian, African and European. The streets are crammed with tiny stalls selling crafts, antiques and more, discover markets laden with Zanzibar’s famous spices, cardamon, vanilla, ginger, nutmeg and cloves.

High above the streets of Stone Town there is an airy rooftop where you’ll find the bar and restaurant area. Here you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, a cocktail or dinner while indulging in stunning views of the old town and the Swahili coastline. The rooftop terrace also has a relaxing plunge pool and sundeck area, overlooking the Indian Ocean.

Experience the Kruger suspended over the Sabie River. Permanently stationed on the historically rich Selati Bridge above the Sabie River in the iconic Kruger National Park, Kruger Shalati offers unique accommodation on a repurposed train. The train celebrates where the first visits to the park were allowed in the early 1920s when the train would park overnight in the exact spot where Kruger Shalati is positioned today. 

There's a plunge pool, giving the unique experience of taking a dip while watching crocodiles, hippos and elephants just meters below as well as a spa, restaurant and bar. The train offers 31 rooms, consisting of 24 carriage rooms and 7 bridge house rooms, each of which is designed to ensure breath-taking views and has air conditioning, a balcony/deck, Wi-Fi, a mini bar as well as tea and coffee-making facilities. Activities include Game Drives, Game Walks, and Bird Watching and can be arranged around game drives. All meals and local drinks are included. 

Kruger Shalati

This is the Kruger National Park's first-ever seasonal tented camp concession and operates in the South African winter months, between 01 May and 30 September. There are two extraordinary locations Tshokwane River Camp and Satara Plains Camp tucked away in the game-rich part of the park amid the untamed beauty of "lion country". Each camp has 30 canvassed suites with en-suite facilities featuring butler-fed hot showers and you'll go to sleep to the sounds of the wild in your comfortable bed. Tents have electrical sockets for charging devices. Tshokwane River Camp is located by the Ripape River, it showcases diverse birdlife and animals and is located in a dry river bed and has a swimming pool.

Satara Plains Camp is nestled near the renowned Satara rest camp, in a land teeming with lion population, embracing the vibrant culture of the Ama Shangaan people in its design. You'll enjoy hearty, nourishing cuisine and swap tales of your adventures around the camp, whichever camp you choose you can be sure to make memories that will last a lifetime. All meals, afternoon teas and coffees daily are included, along with soft drinks, house wines, local brand spirits and beers. Two game drives daily in open safari vehicles or daily guided walking safaris with a rifled ranger.

Although a short distance outside the city, you're just minutes from Cape Town's attractions. There are just nine spacious rooms which are all air conditioned and have television, Wi-Fi, safe, tea and coffee making facilities. Each is beautifully decorated embracing the very best of South African style. There is a restaurant and bar, lunch and dinner can be arranged, all soft drinks and house wines are included, guest lounge, swimming pool and sundeck.

These are based on our personal experience of the hotel, camp or lodge and should not be compared against ratings you find elsewhere. We intend to guide you and don’t be put off by a low tent rating as some of our favourites fall into the 2 and 3-tent categories.​
