Tena Tena

South Luangwa National Park

Located in the Nsefu sector of South Luangwa National Park, this camp has been popular with visitors for many years. Tena Tena sits nestled among a thick grove of mahogany trees, and sits on a double-tiered river bank from which each room enjoys its own private view on to a long stretch of the Luangwa River. The location is a magnet for wildlife, and you don’t need to go far for magnificent sightings.

There are just six tents with plenty of space in between each one has its own bathroom, open to the skies. From your deck you might be lucky enough to spot the hippos wallowing or perhaps a lion roaming. The tented rooms are comfortable and spacious and truly give the feeling of being on safari.

Activities include game drives into the national park, walking safaris and there is also a hide which is open from August to October giving you a prime view of visitors to the river. All meals are included as are local drinks, there’s nothing more fun than swapping tales with fellow travellers over dinner.

For a truly exceptional safari experience, stay at Tena Tena and take a walking safari and overnight (1-2 nights) at Luangwa Bush Camping.

Named after the legendary Zambian tracker and Safari guide Jacob Shawa, Shawa Luangwa Camp is a small, eco-friendly bush camp overlooking the Luangwa River in the Nsefu Sector. This is one of the park’s most untouched areas where excellent year-round game viewing and astonishing habitat diversity make it ideal for safaris by foot and vehicle.

Each of our 4 Luxury Safari Tents is individually styled for a modern under-canvas experience on the banks of the Luangwa River. The tents consist of three Couples Tents and a spacious Family Tent.

The camp enjoys an excellent position overlooking the nearby river, a comfortable and welcoming main area for dining and socialising and a small pool

Activities are varied and based around game drives, using electric 4x4 vehicles and these are conducted as silently as possible, and with minimal impact on the environment. As the birthplace of the walking safari, South Luangwa beckons you to step out into the bush with one of the camp's knowledgeable guides and to fall in love with this wild and precious place.

Nsefu Sector

Set in an area of pristine wilderness, the lodge offers a magnificent safari experience in the heart of Kafue National Park. This owner-run lodge offers comfortable accommodation, a warm welcome and a unique place to stay for experiencing the ‘real’ Zambia and to enjoy the wildlife and scenery.

Set on raised individual private wooden decks, each overlooking the Kafue River, the Lodge comprises 6 double Meru-style tents with en suite bathrooms, indoor showers and an open-air shower. The “Honeymoon-tent” has an additional outside bath. Every tent is additionally roofed with thatch to provide extra shade and further blend into nature. The family house consists of 2 bedrooms (one queen, one twin), 2 en-suite bathrooms, an outside shower and a central living area opening onto a private deck overlooking the river. It’s a perfect spot for a couple with children or a small group of friends.

Another experience is to sleep in a Tonga Tree Basket, which provides a unique and secure night under the stars close to nature. Seasonally set in trees at stunning river locations, you fall asleep and wake up to the relaxing sounds of the Kafue. Enjoy a night out individually, or with your group of up to six. To answer everyone’s first question, besides the bucket ‘bathroom’, there is an ash-pit drum toilet. Alternatively, the camp manages several campsites in the area – ask us for details.

The camp also does special dining experiences where you can have your breakfast on an island on the way back from your game drive, or even dinner around the fire watching the sun go down and listening to the sounds of the rapids.

The camp’s activities are plentiful and, as well as game drives there are boat safaris, canoe trips, young adventurers’ activities, out-of-camp-dining, walking safaris, community visits and fishing.

How our Tent Ratings work

These are based on our personal experience of the hotel, camp or lodge and should not be compared against ratings you find elsewhere. We intend to guide you and don’t be put off by a low tent rating as some of our favourites fall into the 2 and 3-tent categories.

It is also important to bear in mind that standards vary from country to country and a 4-tent hotel in South Africa cannot be compared with a 4-tent hotel in another part of the world.

To summarise our grading system, we have considered the following.

High in both quality and luxury of experience, and property must have ‘wowed’ us on many levels.

This is our benchmark for excellent service and experience, location and /or activities.

Good relative value, excellent location and/or experience, and offering an ideal base for exploring the area.

Budget-focused stopover property, sometimes it’s the ideal location on a driving itinerary.

Don’t be put off, these stays are comfortable and a perfect pit stop on a journey where the choices may be limited.
