Tena Tena

Tena Tena

South Luangwa National Park

Located in the Nsefu sector of South Luangwa National Park, this camp has been popular with visitors for many years. Tena Tena sits nestled among a thick grove of mahogany trees, and sits on a double-tiered river bank from which each room enjoys its own private view on to a long stretch of the Luangwa River. The location is a magnet for wildlife, and you don’t need to go far for magnificent sightings.

There are just six tents with plenty of space in between each one has its own bathroom, open to the skies. From your deck you might be lucky enough to spot the hippos wallowing or perhaps a lion roaming. The tented rooms are comfortable and spacious and truly give the feeling of being on safari.

Activities include game drives into the national park, walking safaris and there is also a hide which is open from August to October giving you a prime view of visitors to the river. All meals are included as are local drinks, there’s nothing more fun than swapping tales with fellow travellers over dinner.

For a truly exceptional safari experience, stay at Tena Tena and take a walking safari and overnight (1-2 nights) at Luangwa Bush Camping.

Zanzibar

This is a charming small guest house set in lush extensive grounds, only 4 km outside of Arusha. The lodge has a swimming pool and an ‘Out of Africa’ style gazebo summer house for afternoon tea and sundowners.

The lodge is tucked away on volcanic hills with spectacular views of Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru. All cottages are privately located with views of the swimming pool and gardens.

This is a small-secluded hideaway which consists of 25 rooms in total, spacious and comfortable guest cottages, and rooms in the main building. Each has a large bathroom, there are two family rooms and two of which are interconnecting. There is a terrace bar for sundowners and relaxing lunches by the pool and there’s a restaurant serving dinner and breakfast. There are a variety of things to do including farm visits, nature walks and a selection of day trips to the National Parks can be arranged. You might like to spend a day in Arusha or Moshi town, walk along the streets, a great chance to pass by a souvenir market for any gifts back home.

This is a real home away from home where you can sit in the garden, watch the stars, take a dip in the pool and enjoy the quiet surroundings. You might even spot a monkey or two!

Arusha Safari Lodge

Arusha

The lodge is located a short 10 km drive southeast of Anderson Gate and sits in a 5000-hectare private game reserve which shares a border with Etosha National Park.

The main building is surrounded by large, ancient mopane trees in a wild setting. The reception area is reached via a curved wooden walkway that leads through tall grass and around gnarled trees. There is a restaurant, bar and al fresco dining area as well as a stunning arc shaped swimming pool with a sundeck. There is even a private airstrip if you need it. Meals are usually served on the outside deck overlooking the well-frequented waterhole, with the exciting sounds of nocturnal nature as your soundtrack.

The spacious chalets have been thoughtfully located and placed so far apart and aligned so cleverly, that there is no sign of a neighbour. As a result, the rooms offer a high degree of privacy and unobstructed views of the savannah. Each one has a private sundeck with loungers and armchairs, they are all air-conditioned with a fridge, tea and coffee station, outdoor shower hidden in a tree and safe.

Spend the day on game drives where you’ll almost certainly see elephants and rhinos along with a whole host of other wildlife. In the evening grab a good book and relax on your chalet’s terrace while birds are chirping, and zebras are braying in the distance. The perfect spot to admire your special surroundings in the shade of the mopane trees.

How our Tent Ratings work

These are based on our personal experience of the hotel, camp or lodge and should not be compared against ratings you find elsewhere. We intend to guide you and don’t be put off by a low tent rating as some of our favourites fall into the 2 and 3-tent categories.

It is also important to bear in mind that standards vary from country to country and a 4-tent hotel in South Africa cannot be compared with a 4-tent hotel in another part of the world.

To summarise our grading system, we have considered the following.

High in both quality and luxury of experience, and property must have ‘wowed’ us on many levels.

This is our benchmark for excellent service and experience, location and /or activities.

Good relative value, excellent location and/or experience, and offering an ideal base for exploring the area.

Budget-focused stopover property, sometimes it’s the ideal location on a driving itinerary.

Don’t be put off, these stays are comfortable and a perfect pit stop on a journey where the choices may be limited.
