Northern Cape
The Northern Cape - a vast and wild outdoor paradise
South Africa's largest but most sparsely populated province is a region of arid, semi-desert stretches and wild terrain. Endless horizons, a scorching sun, and baked earth are a part of what encapsulates this province, and summer days are balanced by freezing winter nights and theatrical thunderstorms. Unending roads lead to some of the country's most inaccessible yet rewarding national parks.
The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, shared with Botswana, is a 3.6 million-hectare reserve and renowned for its black-maned lions, big cats and raptors. The Ai-Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park and Augrabies Falls National Park are home to plants and animals uniquely adapted to this biosphere, and the Namaqua National Park bursts with cheerful spring flowers. A diverse array of animals such as meerkats, oryx, springbok, bat-eared foxes and hyenas can be found in the Northern Cape and Augrabies boasts a population of highly endangered black rhinos.
In addition to historic towns, diamond mining locations and the Great Hole of Kimberley, it is the sense of remoteness and dramatic beauty which makes the Northern Cape such a fascinating destination.
