Nyerere
Formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere, or ‘The Land of the Mighty Rufiji River’, spreads over 30,893 square km of land, making it the largest National Park in Africa. Its diverse landscapes offer a unique safari experience, from rolling grasslands and miombo woodlands to the mighty Rufiji River, Eastern Africa’s largest waterway, comprising of huge oxbows, lakes and delta.Â
This huge expanse of wilderness teems with wildlife, boasting impressive populations of the Big 5 but also Cheetahs, Giraffes, Hippos, Zebra, Coke’s & Lichtenstein Hartebeest, Spotted Hyenas, Ververy Monkeys, and the endangered African wild dog, to name just a few. A boat safari along the Rufiji River reveals all the water-dwelling wildlife along with a rich variety of birdlife. The dry season (June to October) provides optimal game viewing, while the green season (November to May) offers lush scenery and an abundance of migratory birds. Whether you explore by 4x4 or boat, Nyerere National Park promises an unforgettable adventure.
Considerably fewer visitors than the northern National Parks and the simply astonishing amount of wildlife make Nyerere one of our favourite Tanzanian safari destinations - combine it with Ruaha and/or Katavi National Parks for the perfect "secret safari destination".
