Nyika Plateau & National Park

Sometimes described as the "Scotland of Africa," Nyika National Park offers a safari experience that is utterly unique on the continent. Sprawling across a vast high-altitude plateau, the park is a world of endless, rolling "whaleback" hills often cloaked in a mystical morning mist. Here, the traditional heat of the African bush is replaced by a crisp, bracing mountain air, making it a premier destination for adventurous trekking, mountain biking, and even horseback safaris. The sense of solitude is profound; as you navigate the open highlands, the absence of crowds and the sheer scale of the landscape create an atmosphere of serene, untouched wilderness that feels worlds away from the low-lying savannahs.
Topographically, Nyika is a dramatic granitic dome rising over 2,500 metres, characterised by its undulating montane grasslands, deep valleys, and plunging waterfalls like the impressive Chisanga Falls. This high-country terrain is a botanical wonderland, famously hosting over 200 species of orchids, many of which are endemic and carpet the plateau in vibrant hues during the rainy season. These meadows are shared with patches of ancient, evergreen montane forests and groves of towering Juniper trees. Amongst this lush flora, you’ll encounter large herds of roan antelope and eland—the world's largest antelope—grazing alongside the unique, narrow-striped Crawshay’s zebra. While the park boasts one of the highest densities of leopard in Central Africa, they remain the plateau's most elusive prize, often spotted by the lucky few during an atmospheric night drive.
