Banking & Currency

  • Currency:

    • Local currency: Zambian Kwacha

  • Banking:

    • Card Transactions: Limited ATMs

    • Tips and Gratuities can be paid for in major international currencies, though the US$ is commonly used (and appreciated!).

    • If local currency is required, then we suggest you obtain this upon arrival at the airport, either from an ATM or a Bureau de Change

Health & Safety

  • Malaria is present in most areas and in most seasons, so take necessary precautions and vaccinations.

  • Zambia is generally safe, but be cautious of wildlife encounters, especially in unfenced camps.  Follow park regulations and guidelines for a safe and enjoyable experience. Always heed the advice of your guide, driver or ranger.

  • At night-time, and where there is any risk from wildlife, lodges and camps will always advise on how to move between rooms, main buildings, etc. Please always follow this advice.

Travel, Transport & Getting Around

  • The main access point is via Lusaka International Airport, which is served by Zambia Airways, Emirates, Qatar, SAA, and other southern and South African airlines. From Lusaka, a handful of airlines serve the main National Parks and other areas of interest, such as Livingstone (Victoria Falls). These are mainly served by smaller jets or turbo-prop aircraft, using regional airports. Many of these flights depart early morning, so be prepared for an overnight in Lusaka in order to not put your connection at risk. We offer some excellent hotel choices with good access to/from the airport.

  • Land travel in Zambia often involves long journeys on a mixture of well and not-so-well-maintained roads.

Food, Drink & Cuisine Advice

  • Food and water safety: It is advised never to drink tap water, unless the lodge you are staying in has a fresh water source and advises you to drink it.

  • Local cuisine: Zambian cuisine features a variety of dishes, including Nshima (maize porridge), which is often served with meat, vegetables, or fish. Other popular dishes include Ifisashi (vegetables cooked in peanut sauce) and Biltong (dried meat).

  • Drinks: Mosquito (fermented maize), Chibwantu (traditional beer), and Munkoyo (fermented drink made from maize or millet).

Language, Local Customs & Communications

  • English is the official language, and Nyanja and Bemba are the main local languages. In the Copperbelt, the main language is Bemba, followed by Nyanja. The reverse is true in Lusaka, where Nyanja is the main local language, followed by Bemba.

  • Respect the customs and traditions of the local communities, especially when visiting rural areas. Ask for permission before taking photos of people.

  • Mobile and Wi-Fi access is OK in cities, commercial airports, large towns, etc. but can be limited or even non-existent in villages, lodges and camps. If mobile and Wi-Fi is critical to you during your holiday, then please mention this to us.
