Ruaha
Ruaha National Park, the 2nd largest National Park in Tanzania, is located in the centre of the country offering a truly off-the-beaten-track experience for the more adventurous African wildlife enthusiasts.
The park's distinctive landscape features the Great Ruaha River, baobab-studded hills, and miombo woodlands, creating a diverse habitat for various birdlife and other animals. The dry season (May to November) offers some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities, as animals congregate around water sources, while the green season (December to April) offers stunning sunrises and sunsets, excellent birding opportunities and still plenty of game and wildlife spotting - albeit through thicker and greener shrub than in drier months.Â
Situated in the convergence zone where northern and southern hemisphere birds and mammal species overlap, resulting in an overwhelming number of birds (530+ recorded), plants (1400+) and many mammal species. The Great Ruaha River is the lifeline of the park as it is its only permanent water source and a full-day game drive along the river takes you over rocky kopjes, home to the Greater kudu, Roan antelope and elephant, and winds down along the banks and through open plains, perfect for spotting cheetah, herds of buffalo, warthogs, jackals, bat-eared foxes – the list is endless. The lion population here is now so large (the largest in Tanzania) that they have gained film rights for their prowess at hunting Giraffes - a spectacle reserved for the patient or the very lucky (unless you are the giraffe!). The river banks are rich with birdlife, hippos and crocs.
Ruaha is one of the least known National Parks in Africa, yet its abundance and diversity of wildlife, distinctive topography and features, and its overall size with only a handful of camps within it all contribute towards making this one of the continent's best-kept secrets.
